The mission of Nature’s Classroom is to provide a supplement to classroom education with dynamic, hands-on learning in the natural world so that children can learn about the interdependency of humans and the environment in which they live; at the same time reinforcing a sense of community and self-esteem.

A Brief History of Nature's Classroom
and the Ohio Conference, United Church of Christ

Nature's Classroom originator, John Santos, established the first site in Massachusetts in 1974.

In the late 70's Carol Langer, a key member of the New England-based sites, sought to establish an N.C. site in Ohio.

The Division for Outdoor Ministries of the Ohio Conference was in search of a non-summer program that would further their goals of community and stewardship of the earth.

Because of these common goals, a proposal was made to establish the first Ohio-based Nature's Classroom program at Camp Pilgrim Hills in Brinkhaven.  The Nature's Classroom program started at Pilgrim Hills in 1980.

Our own growth demands were met when a second program was established in 1988 at Camp Templed Hills in Bellville.
