FAITH AND RACE: NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Columbus Marriot North

Color flyer

Sponsored by the Ohio Council of Churches in partnership with:

Columbus Community Relations Commission

Everyday Democracy: Ideas & Tools for Community Change

Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity, The Ohio State University

How do we understand our racially and ethnically diverse society? What about the “American dream” for everyone in this country?  What holds us back?  What stereotypes do we carry about one another?

How we think about race impacts our decisions and understandings…where we live, who are our friends, who we vote for, what programs we support. We live in a nation divided by racial lines. How do we live out our faith, embrace the stranger, extend hospitality, and welcome a mix of people into our lives? Come and join us, engage in dialogue with the understanding that there are new opportunities for how we live together.

Church World Service — Rebuilding hope!

With over 60 years of experience, Church World Service applies its expertise in overseas disaster and recovery work to our work in U.S. communities recovering from catastrophe. In partnership with local organizations, CWS can make a big difference to people displaced by a hurricane or economic hard times. For example, Church World Service provided 8,075 blankets to Keene, Texas, in response to Hurricane Gustav.

Here in Ohio, we have provided over 2,000 blankets to agencies in Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, Marion, Delaware and Akron for distribution to homeless people in these areas.

And, Church World Service keeps on working to help families and communities rebuild. For example, since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, in a landmark partnership between Church World Service and Habitat for Humanity International, CWS has helped more than 640 families repair and move back into their homes.

Working in partnership with your congregation we can do so much!

In these challenging economic times your contribution to the CWS Blankets+ Offering is more important than ever.  Please order your free CWS Blankets Congregational Kit by calling  toll-free 888-297-2767 or www.churchworldservice.org

The need for CWS kits is still extremely great!   Details on all CWS kits

July 9, 2010

Friends:

This is to alert you to the fact that the Church World Service (CWS) inventory of clean-up buckets and school kits is extremely low.  As such, we are appealing to all of you to promote the need for these items to churches, vacation bible schools or others within your denominations who might put together these kits for us.

The need is great as we are in the midst of tropical storm and hurricane season where clean-up buckets often are requested.  We are getting in numerous requests for the school kits as overseas partners prepare for the school year beginning in the Fall.

Click here for the CWS kit brochure which outlines kit contents.  Thank you, in advance, for whatever efforts you can make to help us increase our clean-up bucket and school kit supply to help meet potential and existing requests.

Best,

Donna Derr
