Severe flooding in
southern West Virginia counties has left hundreds of homes destroyed and
thousands with major damage. The destruction happened mainly in the
poorest of West Virginia counties, which makes the recovery even more
difficult. As winter 2001-2002 approaches, there are hundreds of families in homes with little or no heat. We need to remember that this region is part of the Ohio Conference. At this time, the very best response that the Ohio Conference of the United Church of Christ can offer is willing hands to help with repair and/or construction. Organize a team now and decide when you can go and how long you can stay. There is no current central location that is able to accommodate volunteers. However, contacts in four of the worst-hit counties have been made by the Conference Disaster Response Director, Jim Ditzler. Groups can be directed to various possible sites depending on the need at the time of inquiry. Arrangements for any group will always include information for housing and meal options. In general, likely work projects consist of removal of wet walls and flooring, installing drywall, wiring, and possible framing. In Spring 2002, there will be programs for new house construction using volunteer help. For further details, questions, or to make arrangements for a team to go, contact Jim Ditzler at 330-262-3242 or e-mail at jditzler@bright.net. If a group in your congregation is not yet ready and you are, call or e-mail Jim. He might be able to direct you to another team in the making. |
